The Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course is a 6-hour educational program approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). As of August 1, 2025, any individual under 18 years of age who has never held a driver license from any other state, country, or jurisdiction must complete this course before applying for a Florida driver license. Who needs to take this course?
The DETS course is required for anyone between the age of 14 and half and 17 years old who has never held a driver license from another state, country, or jurisdiction and wants to obtain a Florida driver license.
